Types of meters
There are two types of meters available in New Zealand: analogue meters and Smart meters. Analogue meters are being phased out and replaced by smart meters which offer a number of advantages to both customers and retailers. About 70 per cent of New Zealand homes now have smart meters installed.
Analogue meters
Requires a meter reader to visit your property and physically record the amount of electricity you’ve used since the last time it was read. Energy retailers will often ‘estimate’ your consumption, i.e the units used, every second month to reduce meter reading costs.
Smart meters
Records the amount of electricity you’re using at half hourly intervals and sends data directly to your retailer each day. No need for anyone to visit your property or disturb your pets.
